What type of website - static or CMS?
Yes, you have a choice to make!
What is a static website?
A static website is the most basic one. We design it
for you, publish it to your designated web host, and
it sits there on the internet 24/7. If you need to change
anything on it you need to get us (or another designer)
to do it.
What is a Content Management System?
A Content Managment System (CMS) is a special type
of website with tools that allows you to instantly update
the website whenever you want.
This means you can login to your website and add or
change text, images, links, or add PDF or Word documents
for your customers to download.
Sounds great, what's the catch?
CMS websites take longer to set up so they cost more
initially. And because they require more computer facilities
to make them function, they also cost more to host.
So your initial design cost will be more and your annual
hosting cost will also be more.
We work with a company that provides a good, basic
CMS system that charges a relatively low fee ($35+gst
per month - most CMS charge $50+). So it fits in well
with out "Cheap as Chips" ethos.
And they provide a cut rate hosting deal for Non-Profit
groups making a CMS website an affordable option.

So what's the advantages?
You can update your website yourself whenever you want,
so you don't incur any extra costs from a web designer
for that. And you can do it on your timescale - you
don't have to wait until your web designer has a timeslot
free.
How do I decide?
We suggest that you have a think how often you will
update your website.
If you...
- change your prices regularly, or
- have new products now and then, or
- have lots of information you want to make available
to your customers, or
- want to change your photos regularly, or
- want to keep people coming back to your website
...then maybe a CMS is a good idea. But weigh it up
carefully as it's a fairly hefty monthly fee.
Keeping your website content fresh is a very good idea
- there is nothing worse than a website with stale,
old, out of date information on it. But if you are very
busy then maybe it is more cost-effective for you to
have a static site and get us to do your updates.
